Senior Nutrition and Eye Health

Seniors are at higher risk of vision problems. Approximately 1 in every 3 people has some form of vision-reducing eye disease by the age of 65. According to a study from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey, Pennsylvania, the most common causes of vision loss among older adults are age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy.

Some of these vision changes might be unavoidable, such as age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. Others, however, may be prevented or delayed with good nutrition.

Here’s a list of foods that may protect eye health as you age:

  • Foods Rich in Vitamin C Vitamin C can guard against cataracts and can deter the progress of age-related macular degeneration.
  • Berries with Anthocyanins Anthocyanins can protect the eyes from UV ray damage, cataracts, glaucoma, and more.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids This nutrient is not only healthy for the heart but your eyes, too. Some good sources are mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines, and herring.
  • Antioxidants Lutein and ZeaxanthinStudies have linked these two antioxidants to healthy vision. You can find them in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, as well as eggs, kiwi, grapes, squash, and zucchini.
